Finding Wild Strawberries (Fragaria virginiana) Virginia Strawberry

I first started looking for these plants roughly three years ago. I in the meantime have learned several tricks that I am most excited to share on how to find and destiguish them. These plants are in the rose family and grow in much of the USA, however they can be difficult to locate. First off I will describe the plants they have three leaves and are toothed more intensily then the mock strawberries(also edible but flavorless) they also have longer leaves thiner leaves and the two not center leaves are not curved in a crescent like shape on the side facing the middle. They also do have runners and white flowers with five petals and white centers. A telltale destiction is the flowers mock strawberries have yellow while wild strawberries have white. The plants are low growing in old (IMPORTANT) fields look for them away from the suburbs in pasture or farmland in the north or in the mountains or foothills down south also farmland or pasture. the berries grow in may to August and are...

How To Grow Microgreens (2021)

                                       Introduction

I have been growing microgreens for five years in my garage;however, several mistakes can and will get you. In this post I will discribe how to grow these delectable greens as well as succefully avoid those mistakes.

Why grow them and what are they.

Microgreens are young plants that typically have their first or second set of true leaves. Meaning they are fast growing and quite unique looking as they are harvested at around two-four inches tall. Nutrient levels can be more than nine times higher than their adult counterparts. However, because of those benefits they can sell for upwards of 40$ a pound at a store; meanwhile, you can grow them nearly for free. They are also yummy and young children love them!

                            How To Grow Them

Firstly choose your seed and use a small tray for easy handling. Use fine soil and fill your tray almost to the top leaving a ever so slightly patted down to make the surface even. Generously place seeds down to assure even growth. Most seeds then will have a thin layer of soil put on the so they are barely visible; albiet, some seeds need weight to germinate. In this circumstance place another tray with a slightly heavy object over top. You then will check your seeds everyday and give them water keep them in the dark or light depending on if they are photothrophic. Once they germinate you can either leave a tray for a day to assure proper even height or let them grow (after the day follow the second one). Water Water Water. You can then cut and come again or just harvest.

                   Mistakes

  1. Use the correct species of plant or variety
  2. If you are using a plant light use the proper light spectrum
  3. Sift and dampen your soil prior to planting to maximize soil contact
  4. Raise your light (if using one) to avoid burning
  5. Ensure proper airflow to circumvent mold & fungi
